An echocardiogram is an excellent diagnostic test in the use of a pre-purchase exam. There are a number of questions reguarding the intended use of the horse which are particularly important. The horses recent performance history may be a helpful guide if it is documented through the results of competition, it is also important to establish whether in the future, the horse will be required to perform similar work or whether future athletic demands will be ardous. It is pertinent to consider how long the animal will be of use or used by the prospective buyer. Horses with recognized cardiac problems may result in poor exercise tolerance, intolerant to athletic activities and various physical activities. Further diagnostic aids such as echocardiography may be required to confirm a diagnosis and aid judgement of the severity of the condition.
Identifying cardiac conditions are also important in the breeding process. Animals with congenital heart disease should not be passed as suitable for breeding purposes because these elements may be hereditary.
There are many causes of poor athletic performances. Many owners
have great expectations or expect good results from their horse, particularly
when they have made substantial financial investments in their equine.
With such investments such as time, effort and many cases substantial
finances, it would be wise to invest a little more for an equine echocardiogram and save yourself some time, money and heartache. But most important of all, save your horse.
