In a statement, Fisheries Minister Tom Rideout says it's hoped the scholarship will lead to more groundfish research including stock assessment and population dynamics. It's been 15 years since Ottawa declared a moratorium on northern cod, and federal scientists say they see little evidence that the fish population is recovering.
