Details
BOAM (short for Support of Business Organisations and their Access to Markets) is a programme Dutch development organisation in Ethiopia. It promotes agricultural value chains, among them Edible oil and Oil Seed apart from the capacity development of service providers the focus is on quality of inputs, application of good agricultural practices, quality of extraction as well as on internal and external coordination. Emphasis is also placed on markets and market information.
The scope for safflower development in this value chain
Safflower grows in a wide range of agro-ecological zones of Ethiopia. The plant is rarely affected by pests and diseases and it is presently mainly grown as a border or secondary crop under a no input technology. This makes it practically an organically grown plant. Given this situation, dramatic changes in oil and petal yield can be expected if certain inputs are provided.
Ethiopia ranges among the five largest producers in Safflower seed. Its annual production is estimated at 7.000 t. Thus availability is high and at the same time farm gate prices and production costs are low compared to other competitors on the world market.
