As a rough guide, I know all dogs are different, but how long after a puppy has eaten should he want to relieve himself?

Hi
What is a good routine for a 7 week old english bull dog for sale...a.k.c champion\" puppy?
He had been kept in a cage at the breeders from an early age, he is a very calm puppy. They advised us of his routine which was as follows: breakfast about 8.00am dinner about 1.30pm tea about 8.30pm then went in his cage from 9.30pm to 7.30am without making a sound!
We did believe them, but unfortuantely he doesn't seem to have kept to this routine.
Last night, I took him out to do his business at about 11.00pm but he didn't do anything. At about 3.30am this morning he started barking and we had been advised not to go to him in the night. After about 15mins we felt we had to tell him to be quiet, and found he had managed to escape from his cage and done his business all over the place.
Instinct tells me he was barking to let us know he needed to go out and common sense says to make sure he does something before putting him to bed at night but can anyone help with what is a good routine for him. I suspect 8.30pm is too late for tea but we took the breeders word for it.
