A exotic sun-loving plant that will show it's happy by turning purple the hotter it gets . The plant will do well in partial shade but will not grow to the heights it is known for , making it a nice addition to the sides of homes as a shrub .

plant description: this stout, robust shrub-like plant with reddish to purple stems may reach 12 feet in height. a perennial in its native tropics, it is grown as a garden annual in indiana. the large (4 to 30 inches across), umbrella-like leaves (fig. 11) have 5 to 9 pointed, finger-like lobes. long purple leaf-stems are attached near the centers of the leaf blades. the seeds are in a three-lobed, green or red capsule with a soft, spiny exterior . though the plant can be toxic to animals , these beautiful tropic looking plants are grown as annuals each year from seed along fences and driveways even in canada . it is said to keep flying insects , bees , gophers and rabbits from the immediate areas . i have to agree since i plant them every spring and have seen the results first-hand . orders are being taken for next spring's planting now , but , in warmer u.s.a states , there are still some of last years seeds available .
