Responsibilities
 
• Operates medical equipment: X-rays, ultra sounds, bone scans, and MRI.

• Ultra sonography: Assists DVM in the diagnostic ultrasound to examine soft tissue structures.

• Scintigraphy: Assists in the performance of Scintigraphy (bone scanning) by administering injections of low grade radioactive isotopes, and observing horses while isotopes disperse through the horse's body.


• Shockwave Therapy: Assists in administration of shockwave therapy to the horse for the treatment of arthritic hocks, ligamentous insertion injuries, old injuries, and slow to heal bone injuries.

• Radiation Safety Officer: functions as Radiation Safety Officer upon certification.

• Pharmacy Maintenance: Maintains the clinic pharmacy through the ordering of pharmaceutical supplies as needed. Establishes routines for ordering and maintaining pharmacy security.

Qualifications
 
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, as well as have a minimum of five years experience in horse handling; which will be displayed through use of tools and equipment, safety of the horse, oneself, and those in and/or around the horse at all times. The Lead Vet Tech must also be able to effectively handle a horse and self during moments of agitation. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Job Description
 
The Vet Lead Tech will work directly with the DVM on a day to day basis as an active contributor to the cohesion of the team as a whole, ensuring the highest level of efficiency and productivity. As the right hand to the DVM, the Lead VT must be committed to the best possible care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES includes the following, but are not limited to:

• Operates medical equipment: X-rays, ultra sounds, bone scans, and MRI.

• Ultra sonography: Assists DVM in the diagnostic ultrasound to examine soft tissue structures.

• Scintigraphy: Assists in the performance of Scintigraphy (bone scanning) by administering injections of low grade radioactive isotopes, and observing horses while isotopes disperse through the horse's body.


• Shockwave Therapy: Assists in administration of shockwave therapy to the horse for the treatment of arthritic hocks, ligamentous insertion injuries, old injuries, and slow to heal bone injuries.

• Radiation Safety Officer: functions as Radiation Safety Officer upon certification.

• Pharmacy Maintenance: Maintains the clinic pharmacy through the ordering of pharmaceutical supplies as needed. Establishes routines for ordering and maintaining pharmacy security.

• Maintenance of vet truck: Maintains the pharmaceutical supply levels of the vet truck in addition to the physical upkeep of the vet truck including, scheduling routine maintenance, washing, fueling, and cleaning.

• Licensing: Maintains Technician license at clinic expense, through attending one continuing education seminar annually.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Schedules other technicians as needed to support the examination and treatment schedule, assigns day to day duties for other technicians, trains personnel, and assists in the interview and selection process.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Must possess a Certified Veterinarian Technician license.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Must be an effective communicator with clients and coworkers

TECHNICAL SKILLS

Must be comfortable with computers, running diagnostic equipment, assembling and disassembling diagnostic equipment. Must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical information.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to lift and move at least 50 pounds, stand and/or stoop for long periods of time. Must be able to maintain alertness for greater than 8 hours in any given day. Must be able to meet the physical demands commonly required in an equine practice.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is a fun, fast- paced, high-end lameness diagnostics practice for horses. Working conditions may vary from inside a climate controlled environment to outside extreme temperatures and moisture levels.
